Let’s talk about that viral filter on TikTok.
Bold Glamour, a next-level filter effect created by TikTok, is assumed to use machine-learning technology (such as Generative Adversarial Networks) to pull off its convincing transformation.
The filter represents a dramatic shift in our relationship to face filters… and perhaps reality itself. It doesn’t distort when obstructed like a traditional 3D filter overlay, which tracks to your face. Instead, the filter processes your camera image, comparing and combining your face with a dataset of images as fast as a video framerate.
This isn’t new tech, but it has put deep-fake level capability in the hands of average mobile-phone users on a platform made up largely of adolescents and young adults who are most at risk for body dysmorphia.
Team Carney played around with Bold Glamour (we’ll spare you screenshots). Our take? It’s definitely a lot of fun. But for all it adds to your features, it seems to reduce you, too, deadening the eyes.
You’re left with a lingering uncanny feeling which—like the tech behind these filters—is probably here to stay.
Green Giant
Ingredients
- 4 sugar snap pea pods
- 8 tarragon leaves
- 3/4 ounce simple syrup
- 2 ounces Hayman’s Old Tom gin
- 1/2 ounce dry vermouth
- 3/4 ounce lemon juice, freshly squeezed
Steps
- In a shaker, muddle 2 pea pods, tarragon leaves, and simple syrup.
- Add the Old Tom gin, dry vermouth and lemon juice with ice, and shake until well-chilled.
- Fine-strain into a chilled rocks glass filled with crushed ice.
- Garnish with 2 sugar snap pea pods.
