James Corden says hosting ‘The Late Late Show’ is like ‘playing a character’

Just playing the part?

James Corden says he’s actually performing when he’s hosting “The Late Late Show.”

Speaking to NBC10 Boston’s Hub Today, Corden insisted he’s “playing a character” when he’s chatting with celebrity guests.

“I guess I see it all as a performance, really,” he said. “I see it all as a character that I’m sort of playing.”

Switching to a more animated tone, the 44-year-old continued, “Like, it would be odd if I got home and opened the fridge and was like, ‘Look who’s here tonight! Stick around, we’ll be right back!’”

And while he thinks acting and presenting require similar skill sets, the difference in “the time” it takes to film both is what sets them apart.

“Our [Late Late] show is an hour a day,” said the scandal-scarred talk show host.

“This entire series is two hours and forty minutes,” he said, referring to his latest on-screen venture — Amazon Prime Video series “Mammals.”

The British actor-turned-broadcaster took over the desk chair at Los Angeles’ Studio 56 in March 2015.

He announced his impending departure from the talk show in April, shortly before renewing his contract for an eighth and final year.

Earlier this week, Corden revealed on The Drew Barrymore Show why leaving the talk show was a “very easy decision” for him.

“Look it’s not easy in any way to walk away from something that is so… I mean I’ll never work in a better environment than the one I work in now,” said Corden.

“Nothing about leaving the show was to do with not enjoying it. I love it, but the truth is it became a very easy decision because I always knew it was an adventure and I never ever considered it to be the final destination.”
