Al Roker says he ‘wouldn’t be alive’ without wife Deborah Roberts

Al Roker doesn’t think he’d be alive right now if it weren’t for the care and love of his wife, Deborah Roberts.

Late last year, after being absent from the “Today” show for several days, the weatherman revealed he had been hospitalized for blood clots in his legs and lungs.

The TV personality exclusively told Page Six at the Hudson River Friends 7th Annual Playground Committee Luncheon that, right now, he’s “just so overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and prayers and of course, my wife Deborah. I wouldn’t be alive without her.”

Roker, 68, also admitted that he had no idea how close to death he had come.

“I guess I know it now,” he confessed. “I didn’t know it at the time. Deborah was great at keeping all that away from me so I thought I was doing OK but that was great because I was able to focus on getting better.”

After his initial hospitalization on Nov. 18, Roker was rushed back to the hospital the day after Thanksgiving.

An eyewitness told us at the time that he had been taken away by ambulance as his frantic wife attempted to break into their Tesla, which refused to unlock its doors, to retrieve her cell phone and follow her husband to a Manhattan hospital.

Locked out, Roberts tried to smash the reinforced glass window on the front side of the car with the help of a neighbor outside their Upper East Side home. Unsuccessful, Roberts took a taxi to meet up wth her husband.

“Al was taken from his home in a stretcher back to the hospital on Friday, the day after Thanksgiving. His condition was worrying, but once back in the hospital, he improved,” the eyewitness told us.

He returned back to work the first week of January, where he detailed that he lost “half [his] blood” during his “life-threatening” medical crisis.

“I lost half my blood. They were trying to figure out where it was,” he recalled of his hospitalization and internal bleeding, joking that he “went in for one operation [and] got four free.”

After discovering he had two bleeding ulcers, Roker’s medical team resectioned his colon, removed his gallbladder and redid his duodenum in his small intestine.

Although Roker still needs to undergo yet another surgery, this one is unrelated to his health scare.

“I’ve got a bum knee that I’ve got to get replaced,” he shared. “But that was already before everything happened, I was already planning that, so other than that I’m feeling great.”

Roker revealed his hospitalization in a November 2022 Instagram post and although he returned home in time for Thanksgiving, he was rushed back to the hospital days later.

He married ABC journalist, Roberts in 1995. Together they share daughter Leila and son Nicholas. Roker also has a daughter, Courtney, from a previous marriage.
